A Word :



A word is a written representation of one or more sounds which can be spoken to represent an idea, object, action etc.

It is the smallest unit of spoken language, which has meaning and can stand alone.

A word is a spoken or written Sign or symbol of an idea.

It is a term.

It is an oral expression.

It is a promise.

It is an observation.

Words have weight, depth, dimension and direction.

They form the parts of speech.

Words play the core-issue in any sentence. Without words, no sentence could be formed.

The parts of speech are eight in number.

They are classified according to the work they do in a sentence.

(i) A noun is a word or group of words that is the name of a person, a place, a thing, or activity, or a quality of idea. A noun can be used as the subject or object of a verb or as the object of a preposition.

(ii) An adjective is a word used with a noun to qualify, limit or define it. It describes a noun or pronoun.

(iii) A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun or a noun phrase.

(iv) A verb is a word or group of words used in describing an action, experience, or state. It is the part of speech which expresses action or state of being. It is a word that tells what someone or something is, does etc., It also says something about some person, place or thing.

(v) An adverb is a word or group of words that describes or adds to the meaning of a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or a whole sentence. An adverb is a word, used to modify a verb, adjective or another adverb.

(vi) A preposition is a word used with a noun, pronoun or ING form, to show its connection with another word. Prepositions are usually followed by a noun or pronoun or a verb with — 'ing' - form or a 'wh' clause.

Note : Prepositions are not used in front of infinitives or clauses beginning with 'that'.

Unlike some other languages, English makes frequent use of preposition to express basic relationships between words. Relationships of time and place for example are usually expressed by the use of a preposition.

(vii) A Conjunction is a word that connects parts of sentences, phrases or clauses.

(viii) An Interjection is a phrase, word, or a set of sounds used as a sudden remark usually expressing a strong feeling such as shock, disapproval or pleasure.
