Argumentative Essay :
Every human being has an opinion. And if one has an opinion, one likes to express it. If you want others to listen to your opinion and be convinced about it, you should know how to put your point across.
If you are writing about what you feel regarding an issue, then you are writing an argumentative essay.
In an argumentative essay, you give your own opinion and then try to convince other people that you are right with your reasons and examples. You can see examples of the argumentative style of writing when you read editorial columns and letters in the newspaper.
Before beginning to write an argumentative essay, think about your own opinion and
ask yourself.
Do you have a strong opinion?
What have other people said on the subject and do you think they are right?
Is there any other evidence you can think of to support your views?
To write an argumentative essay, use the following steps to help you.
Begin by introducing the debate topic in your own words.
Then write if you agree or disagree with the argument.
Tell people why you hold that opinion and come up with ideas and examples to back
up your arguments. Try to put these ideas in an order with the most important ideas
first and links between each idea so that the essay flows well.
Think about why people might have a different opinion (objections) and try to show
why they are not important or they are not true.
Conclude with a brief summary and try to make a strong last sentence that people
will remember.
Read the following topic for an argumentative essay.
Children should not be given pocket money.
First think of the stance or the view that you want to express. Are you for the statement
or against the statement? In other words, do you think that children should not be given pocket money (for the statement) or do you think children should be given pocket money (against the statement)?
If you are for the statement, list the points that you would like to make.
If you are against the statement, list the points that you would like to make.
Read the following points and write the essay.
Your first paragraph should introduce the topic. How should you do it? There are
various ways.
You could explain what pocket money is.
You could explain the need that is felt nowadays for pocket money.
You could begin with an example of how pocket money helped/spoiled a child depending upon the stance that you are taking.
You could describe some circumstance that made you think of the topic.
Your introductory paragraph MUST end with the statement of your stance, that is,
whether you are for the topic or against the topic.
Your essay should have at least three clear points that are discussed with relevant examples.
It would be advisable for you to use separate paragraphs for each of the points.
Your concluding paragraph should end with a restatement of your stance and end with a
strong statement or quota don that supports your essay.
Thus, ideally you should have at least five paragraphs for your argumentative essay. However, there is no hard and fast rule for this. It is just a guideline or an indication for a good essay.
Some more topics that you could write on….
1. Homework Should Be Banned.
2. Keeping Dogs as Pets is Dangerous.
3. Women are the Best Leaders for the 21st Century.
4. There are proverbs for each and every situation. At times there are more than
they contradict each other.
Here are some dueling proverbs.
Many hands make light work.
Too many cooks spoil the broth.
Actions speak louder than words.
The pen is mightier than the sword.
Haste makes waste.
He who hesitates is lost.
