Auxiliary Verb NEED :



The verb NEED can be used as both an ordinary verb and an auxiliary verb.

As an ordinary verb :

1. He needs my pen today.
2. They need Rs. 1000 urgently.
3. You need your father besides you.

As an auxiliary verb :

1. He need not come to to Trichy.
2. They need not pay in cash.
3. You need not have your father besides you.

When the verb NEED is used as an auxiliary verb, its form remains same irrespective of the nature of the noun / subject of the verb.

1. He need not come here.

In the above sentence, the subject of the sentence is HE which is third person singular. This third person singular subject demands singular verb as NEEDS. But in this case when the verb NEED is used as an auxiliary verb, NEED does not take S. It remains as NEED only.

So, the sentence holds value without S.

1. He need not come here.

The auxiliary verb need is common both in sentences of questions and sentences of negatives.

1. They need not pay in cash.
2. I need not visit you in the hospital.
3. Your brothers need not sing these papers.
4. The school need not remain open today.
