Auxiliary Verb WOULD :



WILL : (verb) - 3rd person singular
WILL - short form 'LL
WON'T - Negative short form
WILL - modal + verb
WILL is used for expressing the simple future tense.

SHALL : (verb) - 3rd person singular
SHAN'T - negative short form
SHALL : modal + verb
SHALL is sometimes used with I and WE express the future tense.

WOULD : (verb) 3rd person singular
WOULD - short form 'D
WOULDN'T - Negative short form
WOULD : modal + verb
WOULD is used instead of WILL to describe what someone has said & asked.

SHOULD : (verb) - 3rd person singular
SHOULDN'T - negative short form
SHOULD : modal + verb
SHOULD is used for expressing duty or what is necessary or desirable.

OUGHT TO – used in place of SHOULD on few sentences

Prediction of future events :

1. He'll forget his umbrella if you don't remind him.
2. He will forget his umbrella if you don't remind him.
3. What will it be like living in 21st century?
4. We'll all be dead in a hundred years.
5. We will all be dead in a hundred years.
6. We'll all be dead in a hundred years.
7. We shall all be dead in a hundred years.
8. Stop crying! It won't make things any better, you know.

Note :

SHALL can be used with first person singular I and first person plural WE.

Personal Intention :

1. I'll be back in a minute.
2. I will be back in a minute.
3. I'll be back in a minute.
4. I shall be back in a minute.
5. I won't ever speak to her again.
6. I shan't ever speak to her again.
7. We will overcome all difficulties.
8. We shall overcome all difficulties.

Note :

SHALL can be used with I and WE but is less common than WILL.

Willingness :

1. Will you help me with my work?

Wish :

1. Would you help me with my work? (Request)
2. No. I won't. (Refusal)
3. I'll do it for you if you like. (Offer)
4. I will do it for you if you like. (Offer)
5. Shall I give you a hand with the dishes? (Offer)
6. Shall we buy her a present? (Suggestion)
7. Did you ask him to the party?
8. Will he come?

Note :

First person questions, expressing willingness or wish, use SHALL.

1. Shall I…
2. Shall we….

Do you wish me to come?
Do you wish us to come?

First person statements use WILL.

1. I will…
2. We will…..

Unreality & Hypothesis :

1. I would love to travel round the world, if I had a chance.
2. What would you do if you won a lot of money?
3. I wouldn't have gone, if I'd known he was going to be there.
4. Would you like some tea, if I made some? (Invitation)
5. Should he protest?
6. If he protested, what would you say?

Note :

WOULD is commonly used in the main clause of conditional sentences to show that a situation is unreal or tentative. Because it can express tentativeness, WOULD is also used in polite invitations, offers and requests.
