Clauses and Phrases

Clauses and Phrases :

Clauses and phrases are the building blocks of sentences.

A phrase is a group of words that acts as a part of speech but cannot stand alone as a sentence.

Clauses are groups of words that have a subject and a predicate.

State whether the underlined groups of words are phrases or clauses.

Although the Titanic had watertight compartments, the engineers failed to test the steel or to check what would happen to it if it were submerged into the icy water. Hence, when the lifeboats were lowered, the ship began sinking in less than three hours. Otherwise, a ship would have arrived earlier. Many people were trapped below the bulkheads and many drowned in the open sea. However, many lifeboats were not filled. Several attempts have been made to understand the ship’s rapid demise and the reason behind the hull breaking apart underwater.
