Combine Single Sentences into Single Simple Sentence :



Study carefully the following ways in which two or more Simple sentences can be combined into one Simple sentence.

By using Absolute Phrases

Separate : The sun rose. The fog dispersed.

Combined : The sun having risen, the fog dispersed.


Separate : The siege was over. The enemy withdrew. The people resumed their normal life.

Combined : The siege being over, and the enemy having withdrawn, the people resumed their normal life.


Combine into Simple sentences by using Absolute phrases.

1. The agreement was signed. All were satisfied.

2. The fog was very dense. No one could see his way through the streets.

3. The town was well stocked with provisions. The guns were well supplied with ammunition. The enemy was forced to raise the siege.

4. The real culprit has confessed his guilt. The accused is therefore acquitted.

5. There is no proof of your guilt. The only course open to me is to dismiss the case with costs.

6. Your son has been ill during the greater part of this term. His studies have been neglected. I am unable to promote him.

7. The plaintiff did not answer to his name. No one knows the reason for his absence. The court has decided to postpone the hearing of the case for the present.

8. The tents were pitched in a grove. The beds were placed inside the tents. A couple of blankets were supplied for each bed. In this way everyone passed a warm and comfortable night.

9. The captain was mounted on an inferior horse. He was badly armed. His opponent had thus a good chance of defeating him.
