Study carefully the following ways in which two or more Simple sentences can be combined into one Simple sentence.

By using Nouns or Phrases in Apposition

Separate : He fled from his creditors. This was very dishonest.

Combined : He fled from his creditors - a very dishonest act.


Separate : John Bunyan wrote the book called The Pilgrim's Progress. He had once been a thoughtless youth. After that he became a deeply religious man.

Combined : Once a thoughtless youth, John Bunyan, the author of the book called The Pilgrim's Progress, became in the end a deeply religious man.


Combine into Simple sentences by using Nouns or Phrases in apposition.

1. Cromwell assumed the powers of a king. He had once been a private gentleman. Next he was a popular leader in the Long Parliament. Then he was the commander of the Parliamentary forces.

2. Lord Clive began his career in India as a clerk. In that capacity he was a writer in a merchant's office. He ended his career by founding the British Empire in the East.

3. Byron had certainly some of the qualifications of a first-rate poet. He possessed great command of language. He was a keen observer of nature. He had an accurate knowledge of men and manners.

4. Sometimes he traveled in Italy. Sometimes he traveled in Greece. Sometimes he traveled in Switzerland. He always carried with him the same moroseness of temper.
