Combining Simple Sentences into One Simple Sentence :



Synthesis of sentences means the combination of two or more simple sentences into one new sentence - simple, compound or complex.

WAYS OF COMBINING TWO OR MORE SIMPLE SENTENCES INTO ONE SIMPLE SENTENCE

By using a participle

This is possible only when the sentences have a common subject.

For example :

I read the book. I returned it to the library.

In this pair of sentences, the subject I is common to both the sentences. Hence we can combine the two sentences in this manner.

Having read the book, I returned it to the library.

The farmer ploughed the field. He sowed the grains.

In this pair of sentences, the subject ‘farmer’ is common to both the sentences. Hence we can combine the two sentences in this manner.

Having ploughed the field, the farmer sowed the grains.

By using an infinitive

For example :

I have some work. I must do it tonight.

I have some work to do tonight.

You must look after your mother. It is your duty.

It is your duty to look after your mother.

By using a noun or phrase within commas in the sentence

For example :

Farida is my tenant. She looks after the house very well.

Farida, my tenant, looks after the house very well.

Stalin was the dictator of Russia. He had talks with Roosevelt and Churchill. Roosevelt was the President of the US. Churchill was the Prime Minister of Britain.

Stalin, the dictator of Russia, had talks with Roosevelt, the President of the United States, as well as Churchill, the Prime Minister of Brita.

By using a preposition

For example :

He faced many obstacles. But he succeeded in building his house.
In spite of facing many obstacles, he succeeded in building his house.

Rossetti was a painter. He was also a poet.
Besides being a painter, Rossetti was also a poet.

By using an adverb or an adverbial phrase

For example :

He will win the trophy. That is certain.
He will certainly win the trophy.

They decided to start a new company. All agreed to this.
They unanimously decided to start a new company.
By common consent they decided to start a new company.

When the pair of sentences has different subjects

For example :

The dog bit the little girl. The little girl screamed in pain.

These two sentences can be combined into one like this.

Having been bitten by the dog, the little girl screamed in pain.

Having bitten the little girl, she screamed in pain. (INCORRECT)
It would mean that the little girl bit the little girl.

It was a rainy day. We decided to carry umbrellas.
It being a rainy day, we decided to carry umbrellas.
Being a rainy day, we decided to carry umbrellas. (INCORRECT)

It was a small suitcase. He could carry it easily.
It being a small suitcase, he could carry it easily.
Being a small suitcase, he could carry it easily. (INCORRECT)
