Common Mistakes in Using Prepositions :



Wrong : This cloth is inferior than that.
Right : This cloth is inferior to that.

The words SENIOR, JUNIOR, SUPERIOR & INFERIOR take TO instead of THAN.

Wrong : I have known him since five years.
Right : I have known him for five years.

Since is used with a point of time and for with a period.

Wrong : Suresh is good in mathematics.
Right : Suresh is good at mathematics.

To be good at something….
Clever at something…..
Poor at something….
Quick at something…..
Slow at something…..

Wrong : We walked from the station till the museum.
Right : We walked from the station to the museum.

TILL is used for time…but not for place.
TO can be used for time or place.

Wrong : The book is full with pictures.
Right : The book is full of pictures.

Wrong : I listened to his speech in the radio.
Right : I listened to his speech on the radio.
Right : I listened to his speech over the radio.

Wrong : I congratulated him for his success.
Right : 1 congratulated him on his success.

Wrong : You should write with ink.
Right : You should write in ink.

Wrong : He got down the train.
Right : He got down from the train.
Right : He got off the train.

Wrong : He died from a heart attack.
Right : He died of a heart attack.

People die of a disease.
People die from doing something.
He died from over-eating.

Wrong : He has been cured from his fever.
Right : He has been cured of his fever.

Wrong : He was operated for cancer.
Right : He was operated on for cancer.

To operate on somebody for something.

Wrong : He gave me a chair to sit.
Right : He gave me a chair to sit on.

Wrong : The police are searching the missing woman.
Right : The police are searching for the missing woman.
To search a person means to look in his pockets or something similar.

Wrong : He prevented me to go there.
Right : He prevented me from going there.

Use prepositions carefully.
