Common Mistakes while Using Prepositions :



Wrong : My uncle arrived in the morning of 12th.
Right : My uncle arrived on the morning of 12th.

If parts of the day are followed by dates or days, ON is used.

We say…

IN the afternoon
ON the afternoon of 5th
ON Sunday afternoon

Wrong : We went there on last Tuesday.
Right : We went there last Tuesday.

Wrong : He will return in this week.
Right : He will return this week.

Time expressions beginning with last, next, this, that are used without preposition.

Wrong : I travelled by Kishore’s car.
Right : I travelled in Kishore’s car.

We travel by car.
We travel in the car.
We travel in my car.
We travel in Kishore’s car.

Wrong : I contacted him by the phone.
Right: I contacted him on the phone.
Right: I contacted him by phone.

Wrong : He hit her by a stick.
Right : He hit her with a stick.

WITH should be used for instruments.
BY should not be used for instruments.

Wrong : They climbed in the lorry.
Right : They climbed into the lorry.

IN indicates position.
INTO indicates movement or entrance.

Wrong : He is married with my sister
Right : He is married to my sister.

Wrong : Come and sit besides me.
Right : Come and sit beside me.

Beside = by the side of
Besides = in addition to

Wrong : I have opened an account in the local bank.
Right : I have opened an account at the local bank.
Right : I have opened an account with the local bank.

Wrong : I will return this camera after five days.
Right : I will return this camera in five days.

In time phrases…

AFTER refers to the past.
IN refers to the future.

I will meet him in a week.
I met him after a week.
