Direct Speech and Indirect Speech :



When the actual words spoken by a person are reproduced, it is said to be in the direct speech and when the words are reported by someone else in his or her words, it is said to be in the indirect speech.

Given below are some sentences in the direct speech. Choose the correct reported version of the indirect speech.

a. Tarun said, ‘I want to visit my parents this weekend.’

i. Tarun said he wants to visit his parents that weekend.
ii. Tarun said he wanted to visit his parents that weekend.
iii. Tarun said he wanted to visit his parents this weekend.

b. Jay said, ‘I’m studying a lot at the moment.’

i. Jay said he was studying a lot at that moment.
ii. Jay said he was studying a lot at the moment.
iii. Jay said I was studying a lot at that moment.

c. They said, ‘We’ve lived here in Delhi for a long time.’

i. They said they have lived there in Delhi for a long time.
ii. They said they lived here in Delhi for a long time.
iii. They said they had lived there in Delhi for a long time.

d. Father asked me, ‘Have you finished reading the book?’

i. Father asked me if had I finished reading the book.
ii. Father asked me if I had finished reading the book.
iii. Father asked me if I finished reading the book.
