Figure of Speech
Figure of Speech :
A FIGURE OF SPEECH (Rhetorical Figure as it is sometimes called) is a deviation from the ordinary use of words with a view to increasing their effect.
Thus we can say….There are six pillars to the verandah of this house.
Here the word PILLARS is used in its ordinary or literal sense.
Again, we can say….That man is a pillar of the state.
Here PILLAR is used in a figurative or non-literal sense and signifies SUPPORT.
Such a way of using the words or sentences or phrases in non-literal sense is called Figure of Speech. There are many such Figures of Speech.
