Interchange of Assertive and Interrogative Sentences :



In order to change an assertive sentence into the interrogative without changing its meaning, we have to add a negative if the assertive sentence is in the affirmative.

In order to change an assertive sentence into the interrogative without changing its meaning, we have to remove the negative if the assertive sentence is in the negative and add a question mark.

For example :

This is the house that we are going to buy. (Affirmative Assertive Sentence)
Isn’t this the house that we are going to buy? (Interrogative Sentence)
They are not rich enough to afford this car. (Negative Assertive Sentence)
Are they rich enough to afford this car? (Interrogative Sentence)

Assertive sentences into interrogative :

Mohan is not foolish enough to believe these lies.
Is Mohan foolish to believe these lies?

My father is not the oldest man in this society.
Is your father the oldest man in this society?

The houses in the villages are smaller than those in the cities.
Are not the houses in the villages smaller than those in the cities?

Smoking is not a healthy habit.
Is smoking a healthy habit?

Hannibal was not known for his kindness to the enemy.
Was Hannibal known for his kindness to the enemy?

Interrogative sentences into assertive :

Is this the way to talk to your elders?
This is not the way to talk to your elders.

Isn’t he old enough to manage on his own?
He is old enough to manage on his own.

Isn’t Mt. Everest the highest mountain peak in the world?
Mt. Everest is the highest mountain peak in the world.

Will the sacrifice of our forefathers be wasted?
The sacrifice of our forefathers will not be wasted?

Can anything outshine the brilliance of the sun?
Nothing can outshine the brilliance of the sun.
