MODAL VERBS - grammatical behaviour

Modal verbs behave in a different way from ordinary verbs.

Most Modal verbs are followed by the infinitive of other verbs without TO.

Modal verb OUGHT is followed by the infinitive of other verbs with TO.

Modal verbs have no infinitive or ING form.

Modals can be replaced by other verbs. The same meaning may be retained.

1. I must work hard.
2. I have to work hard.

Modal verbs make questions and negative forms without using DO & DID.

1. May I have it?
You shouldn't shout.
