Full stops or periods end assertive sentences and requests or mild commands.

For example :

His name is Jatan. (assertive)
Please wait for the bell to ring. (request or mild command)

Full stops are used to end most abbreviations but the trend is more towards leaving them out.

For example : abbreviations

1. Ltd.,
2. co.,
3. etc.

A full stop is used after numbers and letters in outlines.
A full stop always comes before a closing quotation mark.

For example :

Geeta said, “I don t want it”. (Incorrect)
Geeta said, “I don’t want it.” (Correct)
