Simple Present Tense

Simple Present Tense :

Let us look at the following sentences.

I do not know how to play any musical instrument. But, I enjoy listening to music. I have many CDs of all kinds of music. I keep them carefully and clean them regularly with a special solution which I buy from the corner music store.

The words in bold are all in the simple present tense.

The simple present tense is used not just for the present moment but for an action that takes place regularly including the present moment.

For example :

1. I eat bread and eggs for breakfast.
2. This sentence indicates that I always eat bread and eggs for breakfast and not just today.

The tense is used with words like always, never, usually, generally, often, everyday, once a month, and so on.

For example :

1. Rishi never forgets to do his homework.
2. Generally, my grandfather comes with me when I have to go to the doctor.

The tense is used to express scientific facts, geographical facts or permanent truths.

For example :

1. Water boils at 100° Celsius. (Scientific fact)
2. The sun rises in the east. (Geographical fact)
3. India is a country of great diversity. (Permanent truth)

The tense is used to express natural qualities or processes or professional activities.

For example :

1. Children love to play outdoor games. (Natural quality)
2. A chemist sells medicines. (Professional activity)

The tense is used in newspaper headlines.

For example :

1. The President attends a multi-cultural event in Assam.

The tense is used to express a future event that is already planned.

For example :

1. The train leaves the station at 4 p.m. tomorrow.

The tense is used in running commentaries.

For example :

1. Jayasuriya bowls a faster ball this time and Sachin whacks it for a four.
2. Virender Sehwag sprints after it, but the ball crosses the boundary line and the crowd roars its approval.

The tense is used in exclamatory sentences beginning with HERE or THERE.

For example :

1. Here come the dancers from Maharashtra!
2. There goes the latest aeroplane acquired by the Indian Army!

1. The earth rotates around its axis and revolves around the sun. It takes 365.25 days for one revolution.

2. My mother works in the nearby shopping mall as the general manager. She leaves for work at 8:30 in the morning, comes home for lunch and takes food for her friends.

3. A rolling stone gathers no moss.

4. A botanist studys plants while a veterinarian takes care of animals.

5. Rahul takes control of the ball, he dribbles it past the opposing team, dodges everyone and finally reachs the goal post.
