According to the Cambridge Dictionary - a synonym is a word identical and co-extensive in sense and usage with another. It is a word denoting the same thing (things) as another but suitable in a different context (as leap and slay compared to jump and kill) or containing different suggestion (as blind worm compared to low worm). In short, a synonym is a word equivalent to another in one or the other sense (as ship compared to vessel).
An antonym, on the other hand, is a word of contrary or contrasted meaning of another word (as bad to good, high to low, short to long). Thus it is an anti-synonym. It is charged with the opposite meaning.
Vocabulary is the storage of words in a reader’s brain. It plays a fundamental role in the learning of the language. It is the foundation on which a student's mastery of the language is based.
