The Formation of Adverbs :



AHEAD : (adjective - adverb)

In front – forward

1. One man went ahead to see if the road was clear.
2. I have to plan ahead to get things done successfully.


ABOARD : (adverb - preposition)

On or into (a ship, train, aircraft or bus)

The plane crashed killing all 200 people aboard.


AWAY : (adverb) - (from)

1. From here or from there
2. To or at another place.

1. Go away.
2. They are away on holiday.

Note some adverbs are compounds of ON and a noun.

This ON gets weakened to a….

1. Afoot - (on foot)
2. Aboard - (on board) and so on

There are some other adverbs which are compounds of some prepositions and nouns.

1. Betimes - (by + times)
2. Besides - (by + sides)

The word BE is an old form of the preposition BY.

1. To-day - (to + day)
2. To-morrow - (to + morrow)
3. Over board - (over + board)

Some adverbs are compounds of a preposition and an adverb.

1. Behind - by + hind
2. Below - by + low
3. Beyond - by + yonder
4. Abroad – a + broad
5. Along – a + long
6. Aloud – a + loud
7. Anew – a + new


IN, OUT, FORE & NEATH are adverbs.

These adverbs combine with prepositions and form more meaningful adverbs.

1. With + in - within
2. With + out - without
3. By + fore - before
4. By + neath – beneath

Note the following adverbs.

1. Thereby - (there + by)
2. Therefrom - (there + from)
3. Therein - (there + in)
4. Thereon - (there + on)
5. Herewith - (here + with)

1. The - there - thither - thence - then - thus
2. He - here - hither - hence
3. Who - where - whither - whence - when – how

A study shows these words are closely related.

1. Hereafter
2. Hereby
3. Herein
4. Hereupon
5. Herewith
6. Henceforth
7. Hence forward
8. Wherefore
9. Wherein
10. Whereon
11. Whereof
12. Hitherto
13. Thence forth
14. Thence forward

These adverbs are compounded adverbs with prepositions.

1. Again and again
2. Time and time again - very often repeatedly
3. Over and over again

I was warned again and again by the doctor not to smoke.
