Verbs in The Passive Voice :
Study the following sentences. The verbs are in the passive voice.
1. The pupils are not often punished.
2. The men are not often turned away.
3. Girls are not often forbidden to swim.
4. We are not often prevented from using it.
5. The children are not often pushed into the water.
6. The boys were not pushed into the water yesterday.
7. They will not be pushed into the water.
8. The players had not been pushed into the water when one of them left.
9. They ought not to have been pushed into the water.
10. They would not be pushed into the water if I was in charge.
11. They would not have been pushed into the water if they had not been cheeky.
Study the following sentences and note the voice of the verbs.
1. His son's laziness made Mr. Richards very angry. (Active voice)
2. The long walk has made Miss Green very tired. (Active voice)
3. This coffee has been made much too strong. (Passive voice)
4. Their new central heating system keeps the Khan family warm. (Active voice)
5. Everyone considered Tom a better cook than Arthur. (Active voice)
6. Doors are made of wood. (Passive voice)
7. Mr. Alexander was made a member of the committee three years ago. (Passive voice)
8. Miss Gill has been chosen the winner of the beauty contest. (Passive voice)
9. I shall have finished the exercise in half an hour's time. (Active voice)
10. The money was lost. (Passive voice)
Study the following sentences.
(i) My father will write a letter. (Active voice)
A letter will be written by my father. (Passive voice)
(ii) I will conquer him. (active voice)
He will be conquered by me. (passive voice)
(iii) He kept me waiting. (Active voice)
I was kept waiting. (Passive voice)
(iv) Your behaviour vexes me. (Active voice)
I am vexed with your behaviour. (Passive voice)
(v) Little strokes fell great oaks. (Active voice)
Great oaks are felled by little strokes. (Passive voice)
(vi) We expect good news. (Active voice)
Good news is expected. (Passive voice)
(vii) He will bring the horse. (Active voice)
The horse will be brought. (Passive voice)
(viii) Somebody has put out the light. (Active voice)
The light has been put out. (Passive voice)
(ix) People will soon forget it. (Active voice)
